It does not hurt. We start with a video otoscopy check to make sure each canal is clear, then place a small foam block partway in and fill the ear with a soft silicone putty. It sets in a few minutes and lifts right back out. Most people describe it as a mild plugged feeling and nothing more. Plan on about half an hour in the office.
The impressions go to the lab along with your choices of material, filter, and color, and finished plugs typically come back in two to three weeks. You come in once more so we can check the seal and the comfort before you take them home. If anything sits wrong, we sort it out then rather than leaving you to live with it.
A good set usually goes three to five years, often longer. The silicone holds up well, and filters can generally be swapped if what you are doing changes. Plugs rarely wear out.
